with Gary DeLoach,
UCLA Assistant Football Coach / Safeties

The UCLA run defense ranked 9th in the nation in 2006, finishing over 100 spots higher than the year before. Coach DeLoach presents an inside look at how that impressive change came about. A main principle to the UCLA defense is to secure the perimeter of the defense. By putting the Sam back in the force position on the tight end side is key to starting your defense. Safeties are lined up 10 yards deep and their technique is flat foot read. A main focus is reading the backs to determine the play entry and blocking schemes. Reading this triangle is important for the linebackers and the safeties. DeLoach presents his alley rules for safeties. Force is the number one thing in the alley, meaning the run is turned back in by the first man on the play. The safety should never have a run/pass conflict. DeLoach also includes passing tools for the safties to use that help them in the run game. Using game footage, DeLoach effectively illustrates different coverages.
